Greece's Priest Recruits Want Desk Jobs Only
Greece's Orthodox Church wants its priests to have guaranteed desk jobs
when they join the army. This came a year after the "Holy Synod"
voluntarily allowed their priests to join the compulsory 12-month army
service which they were exempted from.
This was started in June when the defence ministry received a letter from
Synod demanding that recruited priests be assigned posts in the army
religion bureaus and should be excused from bearing arms.
According to some, the Holy Synod initially volunteered for the army
service to cover up after a series of sex and embezzlement scandals,
including that of the former bishop of Athens, who embezzled thousands of
Euros and was sentenced for 8 years.
