The burial sandal of the Venerable Herman of Alaska donated to St.
Catherine the Great Martyr Church
On Sunday, October 5, 2008, following the celebration of the Divine
Liturgy, Archimandrite Zacchaeus, Dean of St. Catherine the Great
Martyr Church announced to the faithful of the parish that during his
recent visit to Kiev, Ukraine, he received the sandal that the
Venerable Saint Herman of Alaska was buried in. This holy item was
delivered to Archimandrite Zacchaeus on behalf of retired
Metropolitan THEODOSIUS, the former Primate of the Orthodox Church in
America, by Archpriest John Kluchko, retired cleric of the same
In his words to the gathered parishioners, Archimandrite Zacchaeus
commented on the fact that Saint Herman, a monk of the Valaam
Monastery in Russia, who was sent to be a missionary in Alaska by the
Russian Church authorities was canonized as a saint by the Orthodox
Church in America almost immediately after receiving Autocephaly.
Now, 38 years later, this holy item which once was worn the Venerable
Father Herman returns to Russia, to be enshrined at the official
Moscow Representation of the Orthodox Church in America for
veneration by both Russian and American Orthodox faithful. Thus,
according to Father Zacchaeus, Saint Herman once again unites
Orthodox Christians of Russia and America in love and harmony here at
St. Catherine the Great Martyr Church the Moscow Representation of
the Orthodox Church in America. Likewise, Archimandrite Zacchaeus
passed on the entreaty of Metropolitan THEODOSIUS to the
parishioners, conveyed during a telephone conversation the day
before that they pray for him and his health and salvation when
they venerate the holy slipper of the Venerable Herman of Alaska.
