The following are the highlights of the Conservancy's monthly count at Bolsa Chica earlier today (June 14):
1 Horned Grebe in full breeding plumage (Inner Bay/Loop trail)
14 American White Pelicans (south end of Full Tidal Basin)
5 White-faced Ibis (breeding plumage), just south of the PCH parking
1 Clapper Rail (still calling near the PCH parking lot)
2 Reddish Egret (1 in the Pocket Pond the whole count period and 1
moving from the Outer Bolsa to tide gates).
A variety of shorebirds (it was low tide), including 43 Black-bellied
Plovers, 9 Greater Yellowlegs, 14 Whimbrels, 6 Long-billed Curlews, 67 dowitcher sp. & 1 Long-billed Dowitcher, Willets, Marbled Godwits, some Semipalmated Plovers, and 1 lone Western Sandpiper.
The weather was cold and a bit windy to start, staying overcast the entire count.
