I spent the weekend doing some birding around Orange County and had a few notable birds. On Friday morning (Mar 22), I joined the Irvine Ranch Conservancy bird walk at Orchard Hills, where highlights included an adult Zone-tailed Hawk and about half a dozen Common Ground-Doves, including a pair building a nest in a eucalyptus tree in the staging area. In the afternoon I eventually ended up at Mason Regional Park where I had an impressive flock of 78 Whimbrel and 4 Long-billed Curlews. This morning (Mar 24) I arrived at San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary at 7 AM and spent about an hour standing watch for the Least Bittern at Pond A. Just as I was preparing to leave, I saw a male Least Bittern fly out of the reeds at the northwest corner of Pond B, across the gap in the reeds, and out of sight south along the west edge of Pond B where I assume it disappeared into the reeds again. Photos of some of the birds from this weekend are on my Flickr page, linked below.
