A 16-year-old girl died of stab wounds and a 15-year-old girl was sent to hospital in critical condition after Delta police were called to a home in the 1700-block Tsawwassen Drive about 10 p.m., police said Saturday.
According to a Tsawwassen First Nation source who was not authorized to speak with reporters, the suspect is the brother of the girl who was killed. Police will not confirm this information.
The two girls were found lying on the ground suffering from stab wounds when police arrived at the scene.
Early Saturday, police said they were looking for a known suspect, who was also known to the victims.
At about 11: 15 a.m., after meeting with band representatives, a number of police cars were seen speeding up Tsawwassen Drive toward a home near the end of the road.
About 10 minutes later, a police cruiser drove away with a male suspect, who had a towel covering his head.
Const. Ciaran Feenan said the 17-year old boy remains in police custody and can't be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
The identities of victims have not been released by police.
The stabbings took place near the home of former Tsawwassen chief Kim Baird but did not involve her family, the source said.
Baird was one of the band members seen meeting with police prior to the arrest.
The small band, in which virtually all members are known to each other, has been stunned by the tragedy.
"It's a bad day," one band member told the Sunday Province.
"It's a tragedy, my goodness," Feenan said. "[The band] are obviously very upset. This is a very traumatic incident for a tight-knit community."
