Hi Again Folks!
Our next, and 3rd official, "Attitudinal Healing Center getting-acquainted social event" will be a 'potluck' dinner on: Thursday, September 26th, from 6-9pm, at the same location--9 Ednam Village St., just about a mile west of Charlottesville, within the Boars Head Inn complex [this street--Ednam Village--is located right beside the tennis courts at the Boars Head Sports Club, between the huge formal brick columns--if you need directions beyond this, please just let me know]. This is a "potluck"--but don't let complications over food keep you away! We will eat first, from 6-6:45pm. [I'll provide ice, eating utensils, napkins, cups/glasses, paper plates, iced tea, water, and serving utensils]. The time period from 7-9pm will be structured and will generally follow a "peer support group" format. The content, however, will be whatever we wish to use the time for...! [Note: please leave your cell phones in your car or put them on vibrate except in emergency situations--such as a "doc" who's on-call, etc. Thanks!]
I am so very pleased to report that things are really picking up a head of steam in our efforts to begin offering FREE "attitudinal healing support groups and one-on-one services" within the greater Charlottesville area. We currently already are looking at spaces in which to hold groups initially (temporary space would be fine). Tomorrow we will acquire our telephone number and initial phone services (we will be listed in the phone directory both under the names: "Attitudinal Healing Center" and "HelpInHealing.org"--our yellow pages listing will be the former). Our official name is: "The Attitudinal Healing Center of Charlottesville" and our website address will be: www.helpinhealing.org Our first support group will begin meeting weekly in about 2-3 weeks. This first group will have two (2) meeting times each week (to make it possible for all who wish-to to attend at least once per week). Both group times will be on weekdays--one from 10:00am--Noon and the other from 7:00--9:00pm (the meeting days are not set yet--they will be on different days however--so your requests and conflicts are hereby solicited!!). We have at least 5 people in addition to myself who already have expressed specific interest in co-facilitating support groups, and we likely will hold a full-day workshop (likely on a Saturday in October) to introduce the "attitudinal healing peer-support group facilitation model" to those who wish to be "facilitators"...and to anyone else who would like to check it out. We are fortunate to have several MD's and Ph.D.'s with related professional experience in our midst to help train and guide us; and I have every reason to believe the ranks of professionals and experienced lay people with strong skills and experience to offer both guidance and skill-development workshops will grow rapidly. [Keep in mind that all direct services, all support groups, all visitation services, etc. will always be offered free-of-charge; however, workshops and seminars can be a source of income for us and for our collaborators--to help in part with the carrying costs of our Center! This is the way the Center in Sausalito does it...and their workshops are superb!!!!] We are looking at further workshops in Charlottesville for January, February, March...and beyond, so please let me know what kinds of workshops you would like to have. Hobby Parent (email: hobbyparent@...) has expressed an interest in helping to manage the organization and delivery of some of the workshop/seminar aspects of our Center, so you may wish to explore your ideas and interests within this arena with her also. Also, Lewis Crowder has a great deal of experience in using the attitudinal healing principles and a one-on-one support model which he first studied beginning over a decade ago; he is willing to conduct a workshop about one-on-one facilitation. [Melinda Elliott also has extensive history and experience in this arena, and when she returns from other commitments which require most of her attention at this time, she will be an invaluable and treasured leader in many phases of our Center]. There is plenty to do, so if you would like to explore playing parts in the symphony that intrigue you, feel free to contact me about it. No pressure, but feel free to explore possibilities if you wish. The final decision is of course always yours!
Most exciting and meaningful to me is the following: I expect that by February, if not sooner, we will offer our first "targeted support groups" (groups addressing specific crisis situations, health conditions, and serious life challenges--for people coming to our Center from the general public and often from a "place" of immediate need for encouragement and support)...in a space of our own!
Work has begun on incorporating as a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization. This will greatly facilitate fund raising. We can do NOTHING without funds. [By the way, I thank the folks who have begun to donate, even tithe, funds to our Center as they feel moved and able--to help cover our initial expenses, such as the upcoming monthly phone bill, xeroxing, video/audio tapes, etc.; for example, we likely will be purchasing the inside front cover of the well-circulated "2003 Healthy Living Directory"--at an annual cost of $525--and a decision must be made within the next couple of weeks at the latest]. Also, we could really use the gift of a little help from an attorney, if anyone knows of one who might be moved by our cause to give us some assistance. As well, we are hopeful that you will give some thought to how you might help us "network" to locate a group meeting space for an interim location. This need is immediate. Please call me for details if you would like to help us "network" this need...or if you have space to offer.
Claire Heilbrun (email: clairefrances@...) will be emailing you SOON with news about a plan she is forming for us to get together at a local restaurant over dinner within the next week--to begin discussing various "administrative, planning-type" matters. She will lead this occasion, which is primarily planned as an additional way for us to get to know one another and to have some fun together. Stay tuned for Claire's email in the VERY NEAR future. Also, if you would like to initiate and lead an event, please let me know. That would be wonderful!
I wish to thank the half-dozen folks who came out at the very last minute this week to look at some group meeting spaces with me! It's fun to build something worthwhile and "good" together with such wonderful people as all of you truly are. We'll have a lot of fun together on our journey to doing something helpful and needed for our fellow human beings, ourselves, and our community. I look forward to seeing you all--and the new folks whom you and I will introduce to attitudinal healing tomorrow and the next daaaaaays--on September 26th!! In the interin, please call me with any ideas or needs you have.
ALSO, I would welcome your email responses!! If I have overlooked anyone who needs to be included with a copy of this email, please let me know. This email is also being snail-mailed to those within our group who do not have Internet access.

Workshop Description: This hands-on, highly practical and experiential workshop is for people who want to more fully understand the powerful and acclaimed community service model which was developed in 1975 by Jerry Jampolsky, M.D. (and featured on 60-Minutes, The Today Show, The Donahue Show, The Mr. Rogers Show, and many other Public TV documentaries) -- either because you are considering playing a volunteer, advisory, or "co-founder" role in support of the new "The Attitudinal Healing Center of Charlottesville," or in support of any other Center of Attitudinal Healing, or simply to enhance your current group-facilitation and leadership skills. This model really works and can make a powerful difference in the quality of communications and in the level of peace and harmony possible within a family, a business or community service organization, and even internally in our relationships with ourselves!
"The Attitudinal Healing Center of Charlottesville" will provide free life crisis support services to families and individuals in the greater Charlottesville area, beginning in the very near future -- target opening is January 2003. This workshop is a part of our formation/development process. If you have ANY INTEREST WHATSOEVER in possibly playing a role (either a major role or even an extremely minor one) in the life of the Center, you especially will want to attend this workshop! WORKSHOP ATTENDANCE does not obligate you to volunteer at the Center in any way [this is a promise!], but it WILL HELP YOU to understand the potential of this new community service agency to make a real difference in the lives of tens of thousands of members of our community in the months, years and decades ahead. We hope you will choose to join us at this pivotal date in the life of our vision--the day we truly become tangible!
Please pre-register with David Kirksey or Claire Heilbrun (see below). Payment and late registration at the door is possible, but scholarships cannot be offered on the day of the workshop. IT WILL BE A GREAT HELP TO US IN SELECTING AN APPROPRIATE WORKSHOP SITE IF YOU WILL PRE-REGISTER AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE, PLEASE! Thank you!
