After the wicker-wrapped bottle of rough, hearty Chianti, the classic green "fish bottle" has to be one of the most vivid symbols of the old-style Italian wines from back in the old days of Italian wines. The advent of top quality Chianti, not to mention Brunello, Vino Nobile and sought-after "Super Tuscans," has all but eliminated all memory of the old wicker-sheathed fiasco. But it's still easy enough to find Verdicchio in a collectible green bottle shaped like a fish, with scales, fins and all. Still, just as better Chianti eventually rehabilitated Tuscany's reputation as a source of world-class wine, the much less familiar wines of Bisci (which comes in a standard wine bottle that doesn't at all resemble a fish) may eventually do the same for Verdicchio!
Halfway between Ancona and Macerata, Bisci is certainly one of the estates where the qualities of Verdicchio are most valued. The vineyards were totally replanted starting from the seventies and are located at an altitude of 300-350 mts on sea level with southern exposure. The alternation of sunny days and of fresh and dry nights, gives the grapes character and an extremely fine fragrance. Look for a pale, straw yellow color with green reflections followed by an intense nose of white flowers and green apples. This medium to full bodied white has intense flavors with warm, tasty and fresh fruit characteristics and a very crisp finish. Try it with seafood or some of our yummy cheeses! A wonderful start to any evening!
