Mayor Michael McGlynn Announces the Formation of a New Medford Bicycle
February 15, 2013
Medford, MA ~ Medford’s Mayor Michael McGlynn is pleased to announce
that a new Medford Bicycle Advisory Commission will be constituted this
spring. The Commission will have an advisory and educational role in
improving infrastructure and increasing public understanding of cycling
rights, responsibilities, and safety.
Bicycling is becoming a more and more popular method for commuting and
transportation. As more people take to the roads on bikes, Medford seeks
to improve our community for bicycling. Providing a welcoming
environment for cyclists will help to make Medford safer for everyone
who shares our roads, including drivers and pedestrians, as well as to
encourage a cleaner and more vibrant city.
Some short-term goals of the commission include:
● completing a bicycle census.
● creating a map of bicycling routes.
● making recommendations to the Mayor’s office for infrastructure
● providing public education about safe bicycle and motor vehicle operation.
The Commission will meet approximately 6-10 times per year and will have
up to ten members. Prospective members with an active interest in
bicycling and familiarity with Medford’s roads are encouraged to apply
for a seat on the Commission.
Anyone interested in applying to the Commission, should submit a letter
of interest to Mayor McGlynn, including their name and contact
information, and a brief description (about 1-3 paragraphs) of why they
would like to be on the Commission and any relevant experience (such as
service with a community group).
