Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed is scheduled for opening this month in theaters across the country. I hadn t been paying much attention to it until RobertMessage 1 of 1 , Apr 7, 2008View Source"Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed" is scheduled for opening
this month in theaters across the country. I hadn't been
paying much attention to it until Robert Baty mentioned it
in a recent e-mail, and I started looking it up on the Web.
I was pretty surprised at all the stir it's been causing.
The movie's stated premise is that there is all this evidence
for "intelligent design", but "Big Science" isn't letting
anyone talk about it. So where *is* this evidence? The movie
doesn't present it. Did "Big Science" get to them, too?
As far as I can tell, for those of us who have grown
accustomed to creationist attempts at deliberate deception,
this movie, featuring Ben Stein, promises to just be more
of the same.
But how will the rest of America react? It's a mystery.
For myself, I think the vast bulk of America's movie-goers
will be more likely to spend their money on something other
than a "documentary", for one thing. And a documentary
whining about what they're teaching in science classes?
But it appears there's a big push to get the churches to
promote the movie to their memberships. Go for it, is what
I say. I don't think America's church-goers, in general,
are as big a fools as the ones we run into on these lists.
If they come out of the movie-palace and start looking up
information on the internet about some of these claims,
they may very well find out what a fraud the whole thing
has been all along.
One thing that hurts, though, is that Stein interviewed
the well-known atheist biologists Richard Dawkins and
PZ Myers, both of whom are openly contemptuous of all
things religious -- calling God a "delusion" or "the sky
faery" just ain't cool. But of course the film is set up
to present them as the standard "evolutionist" and doesn't
mention, from what I've heard, well respected biologists
like Kenneth Miller and Francis Collins who do believe in
God, who have made no secret of their beliefs, and who have
*not* been "ostracized" by the Big Science Establishment.
There is a pile of interesting reading related to "Expelled"
on the Web already, and we have already run into some of
these characters in the past, like the sad tale of Richard
von Sternberg. I've picked out some links that I liked,
but there are links to links to more links out there that
are easy enough to find:
"Expelled" at the top of the Blogosphere:
(from the Discovery Institute):
(Be sure to read the Premise Media story and note the
rhetoric that sounds oh so familiar. I'm not going to
provide the link to PZ Myers blog about it; you can
find it if you want to.)
"Folk Science" and James 3:1 -- for Baty:
Frank Hagan: "Science, like medicine, isn't about free speech":
On an earlier Panda's Thumb page, Glen Davidson said:
| Well, [Ben] Stein and [Bill] O'Reilly, how is it even possible
| that Gonzalez was the victim of anti-religious persecution,
| when ID isn't even religious in nature?
| See, every lie that Disco [Discovery Institute] has propagated
| has been exposed by your stupid movie. It's almost as if the
| NCSE had decided to make a parody movie, wherein Disco's and
| [Guillermo] Gonzalez's lies are exposed by pious religious
| creationists for being exactly what Judge Jones called it
| (in essense), a transparent scientific fraud.
On an atheist blog, Alonzo Fyfe wrote a simple yet accurate
description of scientific methodology, showing why Intelligent
Design is not science, and then responded to a critical comment
from a reader with:
| I have to ask if you read the post that you attached this
| comment to.
| Intelligent Design has not yet produced a Theory A
| (containing a god variable) that predicts a Result R
| under Conditions C, that is more accurate than a Theory B
| (containing no god variable).
| *There is nothing for scientists to discuss.*
| There is simply no sense in accusing scientists of trying to
| suppress something that nobody has yet offered up for them
| to suppress.
| Calling intelligent design 'science' is sufficient to
| demonstrate that intelligent design theorists do not understand
| what science is, in the same way that calling palm tree a horse
| is sufficient to show that the speaker does not understand
While Answers in Genesis calls for a promotional blitz!:
| ...Here we go... creationists citing Entropy INCORRECTLY
| yet again!...
| ...Entropy *ONLY* applies to a *CLOSED* system.
| Get that?
| Cl2 + hv -> Cl- + Cl-
| Cl- + CH3-CH2-CH3 -> CH3-CH2-CH2-Cl + H+
| The H+ then combines with other Cl- that have been dissociated
| and forms Hydrochloric Acid (HCl)
| Entropy DECREASING in the presence of sunlight.
[Just thought I'd throw that in there...]
And the always handy check to see what Wikipedia has to say
turns out to be fairly detailed -- lots of information about
| American Society for Clinical Investigation has stated that
| the portrayal of intelligent design proponents as martyrs
| and victims of discrimination is a common tactic of the
| intelligent design movement: "The persecuted scientist
| against the establishment hoax. Another plea often
| articulated by ID proponents is the idea that there is a
| community of ID scientists undergoing persecution by the
| science establishment for their revolutionary scientific
and, of course,
| Claims that acceptance of evolution leads to Nazism...
Another blogger comments, using a post about the "Electric
Universe" to the movie's blog as an example of "supressed"

My impression is that the whole thing is a snow job -- but just
who is getting snowed? The Discovery Institute's secret will be
out -- yes, they are promoting religion after all.
The claim that "evolutionism" influenced Hitler is not evidence
for "intelligent design".
Richard Dawkins and PZ Myers saying "God didn't do it" is not
Papers promoting "intelligent design" being turned down for
publication in the journals is not evidence.
So here's this movie claiming the evidence is there, but no
one is allowed to talk about it, and the movie isn't going to
present any valid evidence either. You've heard people say
that rather than read some book, they'll just wait for the
movie to come out? Well, I've read this book and can just
imagine what the movie is going to be like. I can probably
count on one hand the number of times I've gone to the movies
in the last 20 years, anyway -- I'll probably skip this one,
too, and just wait for the blogs to come out.
