On May 30, Pete "Snake" Smith and I had a very good
day of birding down around the Jocko River, Camas Prairie and Ninepipes.
We got a total of 108 species and a few were good ones. We located a
Yellow-breasted Chat at the state rest area on Highway 200 about 2 miles down
from Ravalli. Also we had 1 or 2 Verries in there. The Chat was a
lifer for Snake and the Veery was the 2nd for me. We were excited!
Camas Prairie produced Rock and Canyon Wrens, Say's Phoebe, Lark Sparrow and a
lot more. Around Ninepipe we got a Clark's Grebe, Bonaparte's Gull, Common
and Caspian Terns, Long-billed Curlews and Short-eared Owls. We even saw a
baby-chick-thieving Bald Eagle being mobbed by adult Avocets and Black-necked
Stilts. Great Day.
See you at the gathering.
