Given the slowdown in contributions to the discussion group (or is it a
list? I get the terms mixed-up) I reckon people are busy and that the
new academic year is, now, in full swing and so some(?) of you just may
not have the time for what I'm going to ask of you and that's that.
However I'm hoping that some of you might get to jot down some ideas.
I need to hand in a small assignment for early December and the
subject of the assignment is writing and how computer applications might
help. I have three (four?) questions which I would like to ask those of
you who are teachers of (L2 learners of English in secondary or
tertiary education) to answer. If you do manage to get down some ideas,
could I ask you to, please, indicate the context of the students
involved, e.g. Students in tertiary education when practising lab report
writing experience the following problems: incomplete knowledge of the
more frequent syntactic structures found in lab report writing, etc.
The questions are the following:
1. What do students need to know and what do they need to be able to do
in order to write effectively?
2. What problems do students have (some of which they may not realise
they have) when carrying out their writing tasks? (This question seems
to be a replica of the first; I included it because I thought it might
help to give another angle of the same subject; you may wish to ignore
3. What computer applications (e.g. word processors, email, chat,
internet) might help students in their writing and how?
Anything and everything you can send me will be very very welcome,
