Dear Henry, Wanda, and list,
I am sorry. I think you misinterpreted what we are trying to do. What I
proposed is a list of place names only. I will not be posting any names to
this list besides my own and that of the place where my family lived before
they were deported, which was Hallerczyn, Brody, Tarnopol. Maybe I would
also post my family name, which is Jesionka. If I post my married name it
would not be recognized since my husband's family came to the USA in the
early 20th century. I am very conscientious of the privacy of my father's
three surviving sisters and have never posted their names without permission.
Prior to posting the Harcerki photo, I asked my aunt's permission. I feel
that my father and also grandfather would be extremely pleased with all we
are trying to accomplish at this site and also at "Forgotten Odyssey."
As one member (Marysia?) said on this list a while ago, here in the US
and other parts of the world, the "odyssey" is not forgotten, but rather is
not, and never was, known.
There are other lists for genealogy, and you are correct, the names of the
living are not published by ethical genealogists. The good thing about
having the place/osada/town/village list at the Kresy-Siberia yahoo site is
that it is private and only list members can view the information. I would
be thrilled to be contacted by someone who actually knew my father as a
young boy or my dziadziu, my babcia, or other family members.
Please be assured that everything will continue to be handled with the
utmost care and sensitivity to the living, but I also feel it is extremely
important that we "legitimize," for lack of a better word, the dead.
Various genealogical web sites that I have visited do not allow you to
post information about living persons unless you have that person's
written permission. Doing so could be considered an invasion of
privacy. It might be prudent for our members to be careful when
discussing still living people that are not immediate relatives.
