Please welcome Robert to the group (another medical connection!)
Robert - wow - congratulations on your dedication to popularising this
history and congratulations on the completion of your book "The Brief Sun".
I am sure that you will be deluged with requests from group members (let me
be the first) and I hope that you will agree to exchange hotlinks with our
websites. Perhaps you will make a special drive up to snowy Montreal to
join in on the screening of A Forgotten Odyssey on March 4th (see

Dear Mr. Wisniowski:
Thank you for getting back to me. I apologize for the length of this note.
I tried to made it as brief as I could.
My name is Robert Ambros. I am a surgical pathologist and an associate
professor at the Albany Medical College, Albany, NY. Both sides of my
family served in Anders' Army. Both my parents were deported in their youth
from Eastern Poland and sent to Siberia. My father was from the Nowogrodek
region and my mother was from the Przymysl-Rzeszow region. My father, Henry
Ambros served in the 15th Poznanski Lancers Regiment, his older brother,
Florian Ambros served in the 7th Polish Horse Artillery Division. My
mother's family (Ruta) ended up in Uganda except for my mother's only
brother, Mieczyslaw Ruta who served in Anders' Army (division not known to
I started taking a serious interest in their story only several years ago.
I started collecting info from the internet and read books I could find. I
interviewed my mother and tried to recall things my father and maternal
grandmother told me before their deaths. The more I learned, the angrier I
became. But then I decided it was time to put aside the anger and time to
educate. I collected all this data and wondered how I could save and
communicate this story to my children when they were mature enough to
appreciate it. I finally decided to write a book. I did not want to write
an exhaustive historic account that few would read. I wanted to write
something the average person would take an interest in (even if that
person's family had not been deported to Siberia). So I decided to write
historical fiction in the modern popular style with a lot of action and
conscious not to trivialize (quite the opposite I hope) the matter. After
much turmoil, the book is finished and entitled The Brief Sun. It is
written in first person-past tense through the eyes of a seventeen-year-old
who is in a Siberian labor camp. The novel follows the protagonist out of
Siberia through the route of Anders' Army into Italy. I was lucky enough to
track down General Anders' widow in England and she was kind enough to allow
me quote passages from her husband's book: An Army in Exile. My editor
advised me to submit the work to a major publisher but the thought of my
book sitting on some literary agent's desk while he or she tries to decide
whether than can make a buck (American slang for money) on it rubbed me the
wrong way. So I decided to self publish the novel. The book is due out in
about one month (1stbook Publishers) though I already have the final version
as an electronic (.pdf) file.
I am somewhat apprehensive about contacting this group since it may seem
that I am doing so for commercial reasons. Nonetheless, I have been told
that this is time I should be contacting potentially interested groups and I
stumbled onto your group the other day (it's a shame this group did not
exist earlier, I could have used it during my research!). I have been going
through the group's messages and I see the members are quite knowledgeable.
I am not sure the typical member would learn that much, but this is not the
book's intent. As I mentioned before, it is geared to someone who has no
knowledge of this story (or of Polish history for that matter) particularly
the young-though this is not a young adult or children's book. I realize
the work is a modest account of an incredible story but the intent is to
I am interested in joining your group as I am sure to learn new things.
Whether you accept me as a member or not, I would appreciate it if you would
communicate to the members that should anyone be interested in a copy, I
would gladly sent them an electronic form as a .pdf file (complimentary of
course). They can email me at ambrosr@...
on weekends and identify themselves as a member of this group. I also have
a web site up entitled: www.thebriefsun.com (the site is somewhat
misleading, as the book is not yet for sale).
Thanks for taking time out for my request,
