Hi, I am a member of this group, and I am also assisting Colleen Fitzpatrick, a forensic genealogist, on a client matter. Colleen is searching for information about two Polish citizens, formerly from Warsaw, who we believe were sent to Auschwitz in 1943.
I understand Warsaw is not the geographical focus of the group- however, the missing women's surname (Spiro/Spira) matches one that appears on the Kresy Wall of Names. We are also seeking help identifying a uniform one woman is wearing in the photo. Would you mind lending us your assistance?
I have uploaded a photo entitled Gertrude and Sonia Spiro to the Photos section. The photo pictures Gertrude Spiro (front) and Charlotte Rebhun (back), taken in about 1942. They are responsible for smuggling Pnina Gutman out of the Warsaw Ghetto as an infant in 1942 before the Ghetto Uprising in 1943. We know that Charlotte was killed in 1945 after the War.
We do not know what happened to Gertrude. She had a daughter named Sonia who was initially approached by Pnina's parents to save their daughter. Gertrude and Sonia were already hiding Jews, so Gertrude's friend Charlotte took the child.
We are searching for what happened to Gertrude and Sonia. Their names appear on a list of prisoners transported to Auschwitz in 1943, (their surname is listed as Preuss-Spiro) and we believe Gertrude owned a tobacco shop in Warsaw before 1942. We do not know what happened to them after they were sent to Auschwitz. There is some small chance that Sonia is still alive, and can tell us more about Pnina's parents.
We would also like to know if anyone can identify the uniform that Gertrude is wearing in the photograph. Any information would be much appreciated, no matter how small.
Thank you very much!
