Subject: Kresy/personal history
Kochani-I wish to tell you my family history that reflex the history of
Wielenszczyzna and the rest of Kresy.
I was born in that part of the world in 1936.
My father and his family were deported to Siberia long before World War I.In
1912 they were exchanged for a
Russian family that lived in Poland.
My mother,s family escaped from Russia in 1918.
Both families had relatives who lived around Wilno for many years.Mother's
family were in the area for over
They are,and always were Polish.
In a famous Polish poem the phrase "Litwo ,ojczysna ty moja" ,means Lithuania my
fatherland.It was a
poetic license,however our region was also known as Polish Lithuania.
Our Marshal Pilsudzki's heart is buried in Wilno.
Czeslaw Milosz,a Nobel Prize poet,was born and educated in Wilno.A Polish
University before the war.
There were some Lithuanians and Belorussians who shared these lands peacefully.
During World War I,Gen.Haller created a Polish army from volunteers,many
from U.S.At the end of the war,the
Army was demobilised,and the veterans were awarded some land in Kresy should
they wish to remain in
These are facts.Polish frontiers moved several times,but the main population
in this land was always Polish.
