I don't know if this helps Mark but I know that even though my uncle's armoured regiment was garrisoned Potenza Picena he lived with an Italian family before being shipped to England and entering the PRC. So your fathers situation was not unusual. Potenza Picena is approx 30 km south of Ancona and 5 km from the coast.

Subject: [Kresy-Siberia] Polish 2nd Corps in Meldola, near Rimini
When my father Jan Lewcun signed up to the Polish Resettlement Corps on his arrival in England, he gave his address as a private residence owned by the Baldi family on Via Caroili, Meldola. I know that like the rest of the 2nd Corps he was staioned on the Adriatic coast in the Ancona region after hostilities in Italy ceased, but Meldola is some 40km inland from Rimini. Does anyone out there know if there was a military camp near Meldola where he might have been stationed? Maybe he had been assisting with reconstruction and repair work in the town, as I know that there had been some fighting there prior to the taking of Ancona. If so, then perhaps he was accommodated by a local family for that period. Again - anyone out there know if this sort of thing happened?
