Dear Antoni and Louise -
Thank you so much for checking your various sources!
Based on your information, I went back and re-read the translation of the
recording that I have of my
father and uncle discussing the school that my father attended in Lwow, as
well as a few other things.
First, they talked about joining the Boy Scouts in Lwow, they were in troop
5. This was, I think some time between '37 and '38.
So, the uniforms they are wearing in the photo of just the three of them MAY
have actually been Boy Scout uniforms since they were still quite young in
They said the scout leader was a man named Pilko, which means 'ball' (I have
no idea if that is true, but that is what they said).
Then they said that my father attended a boarding school in Lwow, which they
said was the Jozef Pilsudski Military Academy and it
was an 8-year school covering high school and college. They said it was
like 'Poland's West Point'.
He said they did a lot of marching.
My father said that he was there for a year, then he came home for the
summer, and then in Sept '39 they got a letter telling him not to return to
school until they were further notified.
He must have entered in the fall of '38, so he was 13 years old.
They also said that they lived downstairs from a Major Povanaski, or
Povananski, or something like that who had two daughters about the same age
as they were.
They said that this Major was one of Pilsudski's men and he was also my
grandfather's boss at the time (my grandfather was working for a government
I believe that he is the man in the uniform in the photo posted in my
gallery. From their comments, I also believe that photo was taken at the
grave of my great-grandfather, Bronislaw Szwarce,
who had spent time with Pilsudski when they were both in Siberia. . .
There is a monument to Bronislaw Szwarce somewhere in Lwow, which is where I
believe the photo was taken, but I'm not sure.
I had forgotten a lot of this information from the transcripts, so I hope
some of it helps.
