I've been mostly a lurker on the list for a couple of years, and have
really appreciated learning from everyone's stories.
Today I had the great pleasure of spending some time with Stefan
Wisniowski who is visiting his brother in Halifax, Nova Scotia.It is
quite amazing what a small world this has become.
During our conversation the name Stanislaw Swianiewicz came up. He was
an economist, survivor of Katyn and for many years a professor at St.
Mary's University in Halifax and friend of my family's.
He wrote several books about the Stalinist era and I am enclosing the
link to the English translation of "In the Shadows of Katyn:Stalin's
Terror",which some of you may be interested in.
When I was touring the Katyn Museum in Warsaw last spring this book
was on display and I was told it is one of the best works about that
