Dear Anton, My great-grandfather s story about the chickens in Russia not laying eggs (as opposed to the Polish chickens which did lay eggs before they wereMessage 1 of 2 , Apr 4, 2007View SourceDear Anton, My great-grandfather's story about the chickens in Russia not laying eggs (as opposed to the Polish chickens which did lay eggs before they were taken) was told to us as a kind of "Russian joke". An example of the grim humour that people like my great-grandfather and other Poles and others employed to keep them going. He died in the camp. The other "funny story" my father told was about when a Polish thief went ot steal vitamin C powder because they all had scurvy and they boiled it up to make soup. For my father, eggs were no joke. The only time I ever saw my father completely lose his temper was when my sister who was quite young refused to eat her egg white. It never happened again.Louise BłażejowskaSydney, Australia
