This idea was started on the Polish Media Issues Yahoo group but it
has been suggested by a member of both groups that I should inform
this group as well. The Kresy-Siberia rules mean it is not suitable
for discussion here but there is an overlap. Please e-mail me
directly and do not post to this group. Should anyone post to this
group then they will receive private replies not group replies from
As you maybe aware there is a proposal to get holocaust denial as a
European Union wide ban. In an article in the Economist, the writer
argued that as wrong as holocaust denial is, freedom of speak should
be protected. I am in agreement with this statement. The author
made the point that why stop there? Why not ban gulag denial?
I fully support coverage of any of the Germany crimes during World
War II but from my point of view, the crimes of the Soviet Union are
often overlooked. As much as I am against the ban due to freedom of
speaks, I still suggest a campaign should be launch to get gulag
denial added to the holocaust denial plan.
The idea is that the debate about whether a ban should be allowed
will hopefully help to raise awareness of the soviet crimes and help
bring them onto the same level as the holocaust. I hope to fail to
get a ban but in starting a campaign the profile of the soviet
crimes will be raised.
My questions to you are:
a) Is it a silly idea?
b) Will it do more harm than good? E.g. cause trouble with Russia,
upset Jews due the special nature of their holocaust
c) If you support the ban then are you willing to help? E.g. allow
your name to be added to a petition
d) What should the ban be called? Gulag denial?
e) How do we get it started?
Currently, I plan to run a short (i.e. unless than one week) survey
of Polish group reactions to the idea and if agreement is to move
forward with the idea then send a letter with supporting names to
the 53 Polish members of the European parliament. Hopefully some of
them will take up the idea. This will then hopefully generate
interest in the soviet crimes.
Anyway it probably a silly idea but what do you think? Please e-
mail me directly if you want.
