Thank you for sharing this story with me. It has helped me make sense of things.
To let you know the end of the story, after the “Polish thief” stole the Vitamin C powder, they boiled it up to make soup. It was something he used to laugh about every time he told it – Polish humour I guess.
The other “funny” story he used to tell us at dinner time concerned his grandfather who was in his 90’s when they were deported. Every morning prior to their deportation he would have a boiled egg for breakfast. When they were placed in the camp he was incredulous that my grandmother (his daughter-in-law) couldn’t get him an egg to eat. He would say to her: “So, have the chickens in Russia stopped laying eggs?”.
Needless to say, my father would get very cranky if we left anything on our plates. He particularly had a thing about us not eating all of our egg.
