A family friend of long standing told me that when she was going to England, on Empress of Canada, the ship was torpedoed off Africa coast. She was a "Pestka" who was going to England. She boarded the ship on March 1, 1943. Her story, written by her sister (she was with her mother and her sister on the ship when it was torpedoed) I sent to Elzunia to be posted for the Group.

Empress of Canada left Durban on 1 March 1943 with about 1800 people on board, including 200 Poles released by the Soviet Union after Germany invaded. 13-14 March she was torpedoed twice by the Italian submarine Leonardo da Vinci and sank within 20 minutes after the second attack. There were 392 fatalities. This account is written by one of the survivors, Irena Glowacka-Bernas.
