Dear Antoni, Romuald, and Group -
Antoni, I think you may be forgetting that Romuald was in the Russian
posiolki (sp.) too? The inscription is worse than ironic.
He is correct, and you are right too! We are witnessing right
now a resurgence of propaganda of the worst type. I don't know about
the UK. I don't know if your media has improved since the 1944 Orwell
column I posted the other day, but I think it has. We in the USA have
probably never had more propaganda than now. The scariest thing to me
is how many millions of Americans have fallen victim to propaganda in all
its forms, and they do not know, or cannot or will not see, that they have been
misled! We in this Group are living proof of this history. We know
what can happen when people fall victim to propaganda and rabble
I did not know until doing a little Orwell research that "Big
Brother" in his book, 1984, was based on Stalin and
also "Napoleon" in Animal Farm. Here is another essay by
This is lengthy. If you do not want to read the entire essay, go to
the second page (link below), and start with paragraph 7 where he mentions
the deportations: "In our time, political speech and writing are largely the
defense of the indefensible." Orwell was a rabid anti-Stalinist and
had an NKVD file due to his writing.
Orwell's works and quotes seem to be popping all over
nowadays. Just yesterday I read an excellent essay entitled: "Why Do
We Fear Our Minds?" by Butler Shaffer at lewrockwell.com. In it the
"Department of Truth" was mentioned.
Na wojnie grzeszyc dwa razy sie nie da.
In war there is no room for two [or more] mistakes.
"What Irony"===I am not sure if many realize what
that inscription means?
It is an inscription designed by Stalin(not
himself), but his legions, just after he attained his absolute power in mid 1935
and advanced it into Gulags, when he more or less declared himself a Tsar of the
Empire. All schools had to carry it and adhere to the convention. We at the
posiolek had to do just that. This expression appears in books about Stalin from
there on; not just at schools, but also other public institutions and
I am so pleased you have spotted this in my album;
I did not translate it purposely. Many students can see it, and I am sure know
this expression only too well. Or do they?
We all at that school had to say and be aware of
its meaning at the time.
Thank you for your coments.
