Valerie,, my name is Alicja Edwards,- I just read your message on Kresy-Siberia about your mother s guilt , an emotional turmoil concerning her parents deathMessage 2 of 6 , Jan 2, 2006View SourceValerie,, my name is Alicja Edwards,- I just read your message on Kresy-Siberia about your mother's guilt , an emotional turmoil concerning her parents death of starvation. I am 81 and also a survivor of Kazachstan ordeal- here is the excerpt of my personal agony,- as I wrote in my memoires " And God Was Our Witness"......I sat at the edge of a bed, occasionally looking at Gran. One time she became restless and I got up to prop up her pillow. When I reached behind her,I felt a lump-- and I knew it was a chunk of a dried up bread , probably two days old. My stomach churned and my mouth got moist imagining eating the crumbs. The bread was still in my hand ... I couldn't let it go. I started to shake and while looking at the grandma, I scraped my teeth on the dried up chunk of dark bread--My head was devoid of any thoughts and I trembled while swallowing the crumbs. Nobody saw me and grandmother was oblivious of what was happening.Later that night , I slept at the foot of the bed ,restless, feeling remorse and great shame , waiting for a dawn to come , so I could run to my job --away from here , --from my conscience ...- so full of guilt...."The memories , seem so far away---but the guilt , lingers on.Alicja----- Original Message -----From: Valerie MeareSent: Friday, December 30, 2005 8:36 AMSubject: [Kresy-Siberia] Re: Please welcome Dan Plonk to the groupWelcome Don,
My mother used to tell me that her parents starved to death in
Siberia. She was severely traumatised by this event and carried
the guilt that somehow it was her fault that her parents had died
for the rest of her life. I could never discuss her experience with
her as she would become very emotional and angry. She died in 2004
at the age of 84. Since her death I have been helped by my cousins
to gain a better knowledge of what happened to my mother and her
parents. The Kresy-Siberia group has been a tremendous help to me
I am sure this Group will give you a better insight into your
patient's tragic past.
