Yes, the defeat of Germany was victory in Europe, as long as you
were not some of the unfortunates still occupied by an invading
power. As we know, Poland and the other unfortunates needed another
45 years before they could celebrate victory. Therefore, one way to
accept the situation is to see everyone commemorating the
anniversary of victory in Europe this year, the only difference
being in the anniversary that is considered appropriate - 60 years
for the majority, 15 years for the few.
I wish that I wasn't on the other side of the world and could offer
myself in person to protest at some of these untoward Soviet rear
guard actions that are attempting to distort history and present the
Soviet Union as the great saviour. However, I have at least tried
to do whatever I could and have been busy writing letters, visiting
the US embassy and recruiting signatures for our petition.
I've sent an email to the US president and last Friday personally
delivered the same to the US embassy in Wellington. The earlier
email had only generated an automated response so I decided on a
face to face meeting with a US government representative. Perhaps
something more will come from that attempt as I was left with the
understanding that he would do his best to follow up on my concern -
which was to request US government intervention in the West
Hollywood Soviet memorial.
I also tried to get signatures for our petition but I found the main
difficulty was in people being unaware of the Polish-Soviet history.
However, those who knew the history were very keen to sign, as were
those who were ready to learn about the history. Otherwise people
did not appear to be interested as the petition meant nothing to
them. In the course of collecting signatures the local newspaper
ran a small article and the parish newsletter advised of the
petition. So if nothing else, there was the chance for a lot more
people to be informed about the Polish grievance.
Additionally, my sister has also been actively voicing her concerns.
She has made phone calls to the California Governor's Office, the
Polish embassy in Washington and the Polish consulate in LA. She
also posted some information to the embassy in Washington as
Finally, closer to home, I've just written to the Glen Eira council
in Melbourne to protest a similar attempt at commemorating the
