Lottery Win Gives Isles
arlier this offseason, the Islanders hit the jackpot. Now they have
won the lottery.
A summer that began with software tycoons Charles Wang and Sanjay
Kumar buying the team took another amazing turn yesterday when the
Isles won the NHL's draft lottery for the No.1 pick in the NHL entry
draft June 24-25 in Calgary.
"This is big. This is fantastic news," Isles GM Mike Milbury
said. "This is the break we've been waiting for, for a long time."
The Isles, who finished with the NHL's third-worst record and missed
the playoffs for a sixth straight season, had only an 8% chance to
win the weighted lottery.
The Atlanta Thrashers will pick second, followed by expansion
Minnesota and Columbus.
"Even if we were drafting at five, we felt there would be at least a
half-dozen excellent young players available to us," Milbury said.
