DiPIETRO OFFERED 15 YEAR CONTRACT.
NEWSDAY: Alan Hahn reports the NY Islanders offered goaltender Rick
DiPietro a 15-year, $67.5 million contract, which according to
Hahn "never got past the negotiation stage because of astronomical
insurance premiums, most of which would have to be borne by DiPietro.
The NHL insures only up to five years on a contract; the rest is up
to the player." It now appears a "more conventional" contract between
three-five years will be negotiated for DiPietro.
An Islanders spokesman declined to comment. In other Islanders news,
GM Mike Milbury is shopping forward Mark Parrish, who declinded his
qualifying offer, as a re-signing of DiPietro means there would be no
cap space available to re-sign Parrish.
