We've passed on too many goal scoring forwards over the years, in
favor of projected 2nd and 3rd liners which we have an over-abundance of already. I did'nt really follow this year's draft or know much about any of the prospects, but it looks like we've again passed over some projected first line goal scorers for the type player we already have too many of.
Well Bob, to be honest, I think O'Marra was a must at the spot he came. I know everyone is saying this is a safe pick and that he's a Peca type player, but by this point, all the "sure-thing" scorers were more or less gone. There are a few guys who came later but could be home runs, but they also have a high probability of never making it. We'll just have to wait and see.
What I do think may be the strategy is that the team wants to build a "safe" core of players and then sign the big scorers along the way to add to them, but they'll have to prove that. Especially now they could use one of the guys like Kariya, Palffy, Satan, etc. who are out there to be signed. In addition, it IS still possible that Weinhandl and Nilsson will end up being big scorers. Time will tell and I too hope it's sooner rather than later, but each still has that billing of turning into a formiddable point-collector. I'm especially curious about Weinhandl this season since he DID finish 3rd in Sweden's scoring list with 26-20-46 in 50 games. And that was in a season where the SEL was chock-full of NHLers.
Only Bergie and Nokie were considered safe picks in the last drafts, both of which weren't as deep as this one.
