The Los Angeles Kings have bought out the final year of Steve
Heinze was scheduled to make $2.25-million next season as part of a
$6-million deal signed two years ago.
Heinze likely became expendable following Los Angeles' decision to
sign free agent Luc Robitaille. Ironically, the Kings signed Heinze
as a free agent to replace Robitaille before the 2001-02 season.
After scoring 15 goals in the first half of his first year with the
Kings, Heinze failed to tally another goal the rest of the season. He
started this past season in the minor leagues and was recalled in
November after injuries started to decimate the Kings lineup.
Heinze suffered a concussion on December 15 and was limited to just
27 games last season, scoring five times. He missed the final 18
games of the season after suffering a second concussion in February.
