My wife's ancestors, James (b 1831) and Mary ? (b 1836) McGowan were
from Ballyconnell and are believed to be buried under an unmarked
stone at the Ballintemple graveyard. Her granduncle James (1877-1937),
his wife Mary Gillen and their children John (d. 1985)and Catherine
(Kate)(1910-1966)are in Carrigans graveyard at gravesite 3c5, under a
a marked stone. John and Catherine never married, but shared a cottage
on the road near Ellen's Pub in Barney, Cloghboley PO, for many years.
Four other brothers of the younger James emigrated to
the US, probably in the 1890-1900, and became longshoremen in NY City.
My wife's grandmother Margaret came over at about that same time, and
raised a family with her husband John Farrell, out of Longford, in
Rye, NY USA. Maps showing all of the Sligo localities mentioned above
have been found.
* One of the older James'sons was Patrick. In the US, his daughter
Agnes was married to NYU Professor John Prime, whose daughter Lois
married Sherwood Lyles in Garden City, NY, in about 1956. The other
brothers' names were Joseph, John (Jack) and another whose given name
is unknown.Descendants of these three brothers in the US are unknown
at this time (April 2007).
