Chicago Green Calendar & Notes
Campaign 2000 at its Nadir
Editorial Comments: What to say when you hear "Blame it on the Greens!"
Thanks to all those brave people who voted their consciences and not
their fears. As of Nov. 29, the vote for Ralph Nader was at least
2,771,871, plus a trickle from Florida. Roughly 60% of the potential
Nader vote went to Al Gore, supplying the Democrats with 357,852 votes
over Bush. 12% of the Democrats voted for Bush. When the blame is
tossed at the Greens, it takes the heat off those with power. Yet the
Think of the power of Nader voters. Sierra Clubs hierarchy endorsed Al
Gore, despite protests from David Brower, who passed on the day before
the election. Sierra has only 630,000 members, while they are
subsidized by corporations. Greens are democratic, allow no corporate
influence, and we are oriented toward social justice. Maybe this will
rub off on Sierra and their membership will increase.
Issues raised during the campaign will continue over the next four
years. Heres a short list: Demand a Living Wage, Abolish Taft-Hartley
and othe anti-union laws; Shut Down Sweatshops, the World Trade
Organization / World Bank / IMF; Stop Deforestation, Advance Alternative
Energy, Immigration Rights, Fair Trade, Human Rights; Oppose the War on
Drugs, Death Penalty, Prison Industrial Complex, War in Colombia, Ariel
Sharons Militarism, Star Wars and Mini-Nukes, Environmental Racism;
Stop Sprawl; End Corporate Manipulation of the Electoral Process;
Propose Instant Runnoff Voting, Proportional Representation and more.
The Green Factor may not have to reached 5% required for ballot status
and financing, but the system will never be the same again. Whether
politics becomes less democratic or more depends on widening
participation into what Ralph Nader calls "Deep Democracy." Greens now
are on 22 state ballots, and possibly 18 more. Membership has
multiplied substantially in Chicago, Illinois and across the country.
We are going to be a party to recon with, one with real issues and

6 Wed. 4:30pm "Rally to Save Our Jobs" UIC College of Medicine Polk &
Wolcott SEIU Local 73 The University of Illinois is using more than $5
million of public funds to create a so-called "private" corporation
named WWT. WWT aims to eliminate the jobs of civil service workers in
UICs billing and collections departments, and replace them with
employees who have no union representation or civil service rights.
Current UIC workers being interviewed for jobs with WWT are being
intentionally deceived into believing that they wont lose any rights or
benefits if they quit their jobs and work for WWT. We must act now to
stop this injustice. <haywood@...
