Note James' email about the monastery being closed next Thursday, July 26,
and his suggestion of going to see Catherine Ingram. The Activities
Newsletter usually comes out on the last Thursday of the month, but due to
the closure, here it is a week early. Note the part about the Sangha
Directory and the instructions for how to be listed.

SANGHA DIRECTORY. In order to facilitate contact between Sangha members, we
are producing a directory. It can be used for carpooling, creating kalyana
mitta groups, etc. To be included, please email the following information
with the subject "Sangha Directory":

Geographic area (e.g., North Berkeley, West Berkeley, South Berkeley, North
Oakland, Lake Merritt, West Oakland, Rockridge, Fruitvale, Montclair, etc.):
If you don't have email, please leave your information at the greeters
table during the break.
It will be distributed to everyone who provides their information as an
attachment (note that it will be in a somewhat protected format - one not
easily used for spam). Hard copies will be available for those without
email. This list is for personal use only and will be labeled accordingly.

1. SANGHA HIKE. Sun, Jul 22, San Pablo Reservoir. Meet at the Orinda BART
station at 2 pm for the 2 mile drive to the trailhead. Hike is 5 miles,
only small hills. It can be warm, so bring a hat, water, and sunscreen. We
will stop for some meditation, bring a snack to share. Ernie, 526-0711.
2. MOVIE NIGHT. Sat, Jul 28, 7:30 pm. The Kumbha Mela is a Hindu
celebration occurring every 12 years. It attracts up to 35 million people,
the biggest gathering in the history of humanity. The film is "Short Cut to
Nirvana", showing various swamis, gurus, and teachers, as well as the vast

3. MONTHLY POTLUCK. Thu, Aug 2, 6 pm at the Monastery before the sitting.
To accommodate the precepts of the monks, no meat, no garlic, no onion. It
is ok to come late, there is usually plenty of food.
4. OAKLAND MUSEUM, Sat, Aug 4. See the exhibit "Yosemite: Art of an
American Icon", more than 150 paintings, baskets, and photographs from the
mid-nineteenth century to the present. Meet at noon on the 10th Street
steps if you want to have a bag lunch beforehand or at the admission's desk
at 12:30. $8 or $4 for students and seniors.Take BART to Lake Merritt

5. BOOK GROUP. Sat, Aug 11, 4-6 pm. We will begin discussing Chogyam
Trungpa's "Cutting through Spiritual Materialism" (chapters 1 & 2) at our

TEACHINGS - A story from the Zen tradition
One evening as Shichiri Kojun was reciting sutras a thief with a sharp
sword entered, demanding either his money or his life.
Shichiri told him: "Do not disturb me. You can find the money in that
drawer." Then he resumed his recitation. A little while afterwards he
stopped and called: "Don't take it all. I need some to pay taxes with
