I don't know the answer to your first question, but I'm pretty sure I
know what's happening on the second.
The results are by number of members and relevancy to keyword. I'm
pretty sure the mixing you see - where smaller groups end up ahead of
larger groups - is the result of those smaller groups having more
relevance to whatever keyword or phrase you searched for.
Make sense? (Then again, I could be sleep deprived and pain killered
to oblivion, too!)
