FONDA — An elderly village woman was struck and killed by an Amtrak
train today while walking at the railroad crossing on South Center
Street near the U.S. Post Office.
Mildred R. Vunk, 89, of Fonda was hit by an Amtrak train at
approximately 11:10 a.m. She was pronounced dead at the scene by
Montgomery County Coroner Joseph Riley, according to a news release
from the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office.
Amtrak spokesman Cliff Cole said today the train was carrying 108
passengers when it struck and killed Vunk. The train was headed from
Albany to Syracuse.
In 2005, 38-year-old Victoria Doyle of Johnstown was killed when her
vehicle was struck by a freight train at the South Broadway crossing,
just west of today's accident site.
Montgomery County also was the scene of a railroad tragedy in 2003,
when 8-year-old Eli Banks of Sprakers was killed when a freight train
collided with a pickup truck in which he was riding. The accident
occurred at the Spring Street crossing between Lock 14 and Route 5S.
