Rio Grande Industries, aka "Denver & Rio Grande Western", purchased the Southern Pacific in 1988, retaining SP's name for its "new" corporate identity. Discussion of the Rio Grande as it relates to the SP between 1988 and 1996 is therefore on-topic for this list.
