November 29th – Join us in the Children’s Dept. Saturday between 2:00pm and 3:00pm to help decorate the Christmas tree. Children are encouraged to bring an ornament they have made themselves for the tree or make the ornament can be made from supplies available at the library. We will have Christmas music and Christmas cookies to complete the special holiday atmosphere!
December 1 - A great time is planned with stories in Spanish. We will be reading the story “Como El Grinch Robo La Navidad!” (“How the Grinch Stole Christmas!”) After the story there will be an art activity for the children. Spanish Storytime is for those who speak Spanish and for those who are just learning. The program is free and there is no pre-registration needed.
December 1 - The 10th annual Family Gingerbread House Contest, sponsored by Perpetual Motion Dance Studio, is an event to help families bond during this busy time of year by creating a FAMILY Gingerbread House. The “gingerbread” house may be constructed from any material. To be considered for the contest, the houses must be dropped off at the Elko County Library between 9:00am December 1st and 5:00pm December 13th. Participates will choose one of the five categories in which to enter their gingerbread house: Biggest, Smallest, Most Colorful, Most Detailed, and Most Children’s Storybook Oriented. First, second and third prizes will be awarded in each category. These prizes will be determined by votes from the public and staff. Voters will also be asked to choose “Best of Show”. Winners will be announced on Friday, December 19th during the Children’s Holiday Party, which starts at 2:30pm.
Groups, organizations, and/or businesses who are interested in making a gingerbread house, may do so. These will be for display only.
December 1st through December 13th - The Elko County Library’s Children’s Department is announcing their semi-annual book fair. The book fair will begin at 9:00am December 1st and will continue until 5:00pm December 13th. This is a great time to choose books for Christmas gifts, and to give children special reading for the winter holiday break. Proceeds from the book sale are used to purchase supplies for storytime & to sponsor special events throughout the year in the Children's Department such as the Holiday Party.
New this year is the opportunity for people to purchase a book, or books, as a Christmas Gift for teachers at Headstart. Teachers from Headstart will choose a group of wish list books, these books may be purchased for Headstart at discounted prices.
Flyers are available now at the library.
December 1st – Sugar Plum Tree will be up and decorated with nametags of those who may not have gifts at Christmas time without your help. These names come from The Manor, NYTC, Green Acres/Cimarron West and County Welfare office. Come in and select as many as you wish. Packages must be at the library by close of business on Tuesday, December 16th.
December 11th – Our 10:30am storytime will be extra special Thursday, December 11th with guest readers Karen Collett Wilson and Susan Zerga. They will read their newest book in the Deer Tale Series called The White Fawn. Storytime is a free program and no pre-registration is needed
December 13th – The Elko County Library will host a book signing for author Karen Collett Wilson and photographer Susan Zerga, on Saturday, December 13th from 1:30pm to 3:00pm. Wilson and Zerga’s new children’s book titled, The White Fawn and Susan’s pictorial record of Northeastern Nevada titled, Nevada Colors, along with their previous books will be available for purchase.
Friday, December 19th - @ 2:30pm the fun continues in the Children’s Department of the Elko County Library with a Children’s Holiday Party. Children will be able to participate in a variety of events, including coloring pages, making a Christmas paper chain, and creating Christmas ornaments for the family. There will also be a Christmas game. At 3:00 we will meet at the storytime carpet for Christmas Stories and a special visit from Santa, who will give a book to each child.
December 29th & 30th – Just For Fun Crafts at 3:30 is a great way for children from 6 years old and older to spend 30 to 45 minutes during winter break. We will have a variety of crafts available for the children to make. Each craft is $1.00 and because of limited space, pre-registration is needed.
Storytime will continue through the holiday season meeting at 10:30am November 25th & 26th and December 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 16th, 17th, 18th, 23rd, 24th, 30th, and 31st. These are free programs designed for preschool age children, but all ages are welcome. There is no preregistration needed.
