Helping Elko County’s children learn to love reading –
the FUN way!
Furry Tales is a very simple concept: Children read to dogs. The dogs listen and don’t tease, laugh, or judge the child. Through Furry Tales, the staff at the Elko County Library, trainer Patricia Blanchard and her certified therapy dog, Merlin, want to create a positive, nonthreatening, fun environment for Elko County’s children to learn to love reading.
“Merlin loves children and to be read to! I know many children in the community will enjoy this experience,” said Ms. Blanchard. “Researchers have proven that children’s reading abilities improve as they gain confidence reading to dogs. Warm brown eyes and doggy grins make all the difference to children’s reading experiences as children share their favorite books with man’s best friend, and Merlin needs the job!”
The next Furry Tales will be Saturday, Nov. 19th from 1:30 to 2:30 when Merlin and his trainer, Patricia Blanchard, will visit the Elko County Library. For more information call the library at 738-3066 or stop in.
