Another bit of playtesting that has got nothing to do with the Season with Matt Smith and everything to do with the latest version of `Adventures in History that is to be released this coming weekend. One of the brand new Adventures included in the expansion is Rome at the height of the Empire so players can meet Julius Caesar. A brand new Enemy in the expansion is time meddler Hephaestus. So for this playtest I thought I would incorporate both. No surprises, but useful from a design point of view.
So the Doctor, Amy and Rory, seeing this is ancient Rome (I'm surprised Rory doesn't get twinges of familiarity...!) and this is a Holiday location, decide to Relax a bit and tour the incredible city. But Amy (being Amy) is soon bored and threatens to go off on her own unless the boys show her a REALLY good time. Before they can take her up on the offer however, they are ambushed by bandits. Fortunately, the trio manage to fend them off and hare off into the streets of Rome where Amy promptly gets separated from the other two!
As the Doctor and Rory try to retrace their steps, Amy bumps into a patrol of mounted soldiers led by none other than Julius Caesar in person. Amy can't quite convince him to let her go, but he's a sucker for a pretty face so just captures her and takes her with him. This is witnessed by the Doctor and Rory who follow Caesar back to a temple where he puts Amy as a slave worker.
As the Doctor and Rory plan a rescue, the Doctor notices something that makes his blood run cold an unstable Time Rift at the heart of the temple. What could have caused it? And what kind of damage could it cause? Amy, much to Rory's concern, will have to wait this is far more important.
Whilst Amy fetches and carries within the temple (dressed in a rather slinky red robe), the Doctor and Rory investigate the rift and discover that it has been artificially created someone is doing some dangerous experiments with Time! Amy meanwhile meets a friendly priest Melanthus - who seems a little afraid of what is happening within the temple. With his help, she manages to escape her duties and they both flee. It's not long before they find the Doctor and Rory. Now all the pieces fit together and with Amy and Melanthus' help, the Doctor realises what's happening. But the four are suddenly surrounded by an old man Hephaestus and 3 priest-scientists.
Although Amy and Rory escape, the Doctor is far too interested to go anywhere, and with Melanthus (too old to do a runner anyway) questions Hephaestus. As it turns out, the old time meddler is completely bonkers and sadistic too. After gloating over his captives (and telling them a vital part of his plan with his unstable rift), he locks them up and sentences them to be executed when the Rift is fully formed.
Amy and Rory rescue the Doctor and Melanthus before any sacrificial daggers are sharpened however, although they run into Hephaestus again now with 4 angry looking priests the Doctor manages to fast talk them and then convinces Hephaestus to let him seal the rift and take the old guy home in his TARDIS.
So everything ends happily and I get (due to Adventure scaling) a measly 2 luck points!!
