This 1957 Jabro Mk1 H-Modified race car was rediscovered in the late 1980s by West Coast racer Terry Matheny, who restored the car; and according to his wife, this 1957 Jabro/Crosley was pictured in the Monterey Historic Program in 1991 and was a participant there again in 1996 before being sold in 2002.
Terry Matheny and the car are pictured on page 38 of Joe Puckett's book "Big Drivers in Little Cars" at Monterey in 1996. The car is now available in Northern Alabama for $17,500. Contact mail@...
Today, many of the H Mods are prepared to later specs with engines over the original 750cc limit, but Terry's approach was to have a car that could run with any Vintage Racing group. This Jabro is built to VSCCA Vintage Rules and SCCA 1959 regulations, so it should qualify for Pittsburgh GP and other East Coast events. It is again just as it was at Monterey in `96.
This Crosley engine has a very hot cam, dual Dellorto carbs, and an external oil-cooler with a Sprite 4-Speed transmission and brakes and rear axle; the tires are minimally-used but aged Dunlops. The car hadn't seen daylight for eight years until last month. Now it needs a new driver, appropriate seat belts, pre-race servicing, and a return to the track in the pre-1960 H-Modified Class.
The 1996 Monterey dash plaque is with the car. Also, there might be a Crosley or two in the CSRG Charity Challenge race in October, which will feature an H-Mod reunion race. We have photos in our CCOC 'For Sale' album.
