Results are in for kit: N17039, name: Mongan, ancestor: Martin Mongan,
b. abt 1830 and d.abt 1900, Ireland. He is R1b and falls within no
known subclade thus a deep clade test is in order.
In the list of matches there are several to persons named Nichols at a
genetic distance (GD) of 4 or less at 37 markers. According to "Irish
Pedigrees; or the Origin and Stem of the Irish Nation" by John O'Hart,
Nichols is a name that branches out of the Corca Laidhe (CL) Coffey
pedigree. At this point we have not listed the name Nichols or
variants as CL because the name is not mentioned in O'Donovan and we
have found nothing to corroborate O'Hart.
There are another 30 or so other names in the match list at GD of 4 or
less but none that I recognized as CL. This is typical of R1b and many
of these matches will drop out if an upgrade to 67 is applied.
Project participants are advised to search for matches to CL names
deeper than the match list generated by FTDNA. This is done by
searching in three databases: ysearch.org, smgf.org and ancestry.com
