One of the previously-reported Blue-footed Boobies was still at the
Whitewater River Delta, Salton Sea today, 8/08/2006. Other birders missed
it between 6 and 8 AM, but it made an appearance shortly before 9:30. It
was first seen roughly 1/4-mile due south of the delta flying west to east.
Then when it was several hundred yards east of the delta, it began a turn to
the north. This bird apparently has very acute hearing AND can understand
English, as it answered my request to fly back to the delta, flying almost
directly overhead. It then continued eastward, disappearing out of sight.
During this entire time, it was harassed by a flock of approximately 10
It then flew back in from the east at about 10:40, this time without the
usual tern escort. It flew back over the delta, picking up a couple of
terns in the process, and then proceeded south-southeast, back out of sight.
I left after this sighting, but a couple of birders were headed out to the
delta, so there may have been additional sightings later in the day.
I got some third-rate photographs [which I'll blame on the poor light :) ]
from its first fly-by, some of which are available at the following URLs
