Jim Teitz and Rebecca Greene found a LeConte's sparrow this morning
along Old Samoa Road west of Arcata. For details call the Arcata Hotline
707-822-5666. The UTM coordinates are given in NAD27 CONUS. This bird was
observed by numerous observers this afternoon.
To find the location travel west of Arcata on Samoa Blvd to V Street.
Turn south toward the bay and follow the road around to the right; it
becomes Old Samoa Road. Go west about 3/4 mile to the 2nd gravel parking
area for the Mad River Wildlife Area. Walk south on the trail toward the
bay about 300 yards and cross the small slough. Go another 100 feet and
look to the right. You will see several blackberry bushes. The LeConte's
sparrow has been seen in the largest blackberry bush and a smaller bush to
the north about 75 yards west of the trail. This is a first county record
according to Dr. Harris.
The Common Grackle is still being seen along Mad River Road. See
previous CALBIRD messages.
