2012 marks the 80th anniversary of Robert E. Howard's "The
Phoenix on the Sword," Conan's first appearance in print. It ran in the
December 1932 issue of WEIRD TALES and would be followed in that magazine by sixteen more
stories that ran through 1936. Although tales of swordsmen and sorcerers had certainly preceded them,
it would be Howard’s Conan of Cimmeria stories that
would popularize the genre. On Saturday, August 11th,
PulpFest will celebrate the eightieth birthday of Conan and the sword
and sorcery genre with a panel presentation hosted by Rusty Burke, the
editor of the highly acclaimed Howard reprint series published by Del
Rusty will be joined by Don Herron, Brian Leno, and
John D. Squires. For more details on PulpFest's "Robert E. Howard’s
Conan and the Birth of Sword and Sorcery" panel, please visit www.pulpfest.com.
