If you go to the trouble of (a) adding the half rate vocoder and (b) adding code for the new control messages; why leave out discerning the slots when picking off voice cells to feed to the vocoder?
If anything, skipping unwanted cells is the easy part. The reports (from knowledgeable people) are the '800 is handling X2 correctly now. They hear coherent conversations.
Just to be clear; X2 is not phase 2.
The only questions left are - whether the '800 will do phase 2 when such systems go live - and what's going to be Uniden's response. The total number of X2 systems is very small. The existing X2 systems might be upgraded to proper phase 2 in which case it would be prudent for Uniden to leapfrog X2 in favor of real phase 2.
