Ah, but there's Catholic and there's Catholic. Were there Beguines in your
time period? Cathars? Had Erasmus retranslated the Bible and sparked the
rise of the New Learning? Had Lorenzo de' Medici and his circle begun trying
to reconcile the Bible and the neo-Platonic writings of "Hermes Trismegistus,"
the mythical alchemist/theologian of medieval legend? Were there anchorites
or Flagellants? The Brethren of the New Life?
There is a tremendous amount of variation in the supposedly monolithic
Catholic Church. A little research may surprise you by how "modern" and
non-religious some variants are. Good luck!
