I have been building boat models (and some full
size craft too) for over 51 years and have on a number of occasions scaled and
lofted full size drawings down to model size. To build a full size boat
you must loft the craft from the Table of Offsets and the Lines drawings.
To build a model from the same drawings, it is only necessary to loft at the
reduced values based on whatever scale you decide to use. Note that the
larger scale models (such as 1/4 scale or 1/6 scale) always produce a more
useable model....one that is less affected by wave action and therefore looks
and performs better than a smaller scale such as 1/8. Also, by building to
a larger scale, you can use the same construction techniques as full size boat
construction and the construction of such a model is much easier to manage
during the construction process as it is inherently more rugged.
Furthermore, the difference in cost to build a very small scale model at 1/8
scale versus building one at 1/6 or 1/4 is negligible and well worth the slight
extra cost in terms of the pleasure in building and the use of the
