I just returned from the Animal Rights 2000 conference in Washington, DC.
One of the many significant points covered was this:
The NRA has approx 3 million members and is only about 1% of the population
(in the U.S.) while the Animal Rights (AR) movement is about 18 million
strong -- so why is the NRA so formidible and ALWAYS gets its way with
Congress? Is it just money???
No, it's SOLIDARITY -- forgetting one's differences and UNIFYING behind any
piece of pending legislation that threatens their "rights." Whenever a bill
is pending before Congress or a State Legislature, the NRA gets its massive
mechanism into motion: e-mailing, writing and calling members to tell EACH
ONE to call and write their Legislators immediately!
Well, WE CAN DO THAT TOO! The technology is there, the will is there and
the membership base is there! Turns out that the HSUS may be in the best
position to coordinate with a 7 million membership list and an
e-mail advocacy network already in place. So this year, look to even
greater cooperation and coordination among AR groups to target
letter-writing and phone call campaigns to GET RESULTS. Let's forget our
(sometimes) differences and UNITE on behalf of the animals EACH & EVERY
TIME! We CAN become a formidable force for change with a predictable record
