Yup: They're at it Again: Tell Senate that the Dept of Defense (DOD) Can't Bypass Environmental Laws
Please forward widely and take action at the DEN website today!
This week, an effort in Congress to exempt the Department of Defense from parts of our nation's most important laws protecting wildlife is coming to a climax. Members of the House and Senate are considering the Defense Authorization Bill, which could contain exemptions from the Endangered Species Act (ESA), and key protections of the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA), as well as an amendment that threatens Arizonas San Pedro River, the last free flowing river in the American southwest.
Senator John Warner (R-VA), the leading Senator on the committee in charge of the bill, and Senator Susan Collins (R-ME), have the power to make sure
that threatened and endangered species are protected on military installations and during military activities.
WHAT YOU CAN DO:
Please send a free fax to Senators Warner and Collins today and urge them to use theirleadership position to support the Senate-passed version of the Defense Authorization Bill, which takes a much more moderate and balanced approach to the ESA and does not contain an exemption from the MMPA or the rider threatening the San Pedro River.
Note: Senator Warner's phone number is 202-224-2023; and his fax number is 202-224-6295. Senator Collins' phone is 202-224-2523; her fax is 202-224-2693
