Easter Sunday brought the happy surprise of a DARK-EYED JUNCO to Birch Creek Ranch, in the evening. The RED POLL flock is slowly dispersing as the insects are starting to come out of hibernation and the sap is rising. The flock is down to around 40 birds, from 75 or so. They are still happily mobbing the feeders, especially in the mornings, which are still cold before the sun begins to warm the days.
I saw my first TRUMPETER SWANS on April 5th, though friends had told me about their own sightings in the Talkeetna area a few days before that. Probably the same three swans.
Also on the 5th I saw two pairs of COMMON GOLDENEYES on the pond across from Fish Lake and a pair of MALLARDS there as well, along with a young moose, standing in the shallow water and eating aquatic plants. A busy place!
