The multiplatform night news editor is half of a key partnership that organizes and runs The Sacramento Bee newsroom's distribution of content on digital and print platforms.This editor works closely with the multifplatform day news editor, the assigning editors and the production editors to ensure maximum impact for The Bee's content on print and digital platforms. This position is in charge of the evening production operation at The Bee, an operation with more print than digital responsibilities but one that soon will oversee news decisions for a tablet app as well as desktop and other digital products.
This editor will run the afternoon news meeting, and will work in consultation with other editors to determine top stories for the evening digital cycle and A1 stories for print. Duties include setting nightly priorities and enforcing story and page deadlines to ensure manageable workflow. This editor is responsible for daily and longer-range planning for events such as elections and special projects, coordinating with assigning desks to ensure that all parts of the news operation maintain quality while meeting deadlines. The night editor will have some hands-on design or copy editing duties, including helping set up A1 centerpieces in advance or jumping in when the desk gets behind.
The ideal candidate is a team player with proven leadership qualities, news judgment and organizational skills. At least five years' experience in daily journalism is required, including a strong background in print design and production and a thorough knowledge of digital publishing operations and social media best practices for newsrooms. The job includes supervisory responsibilities; at least three years' management experience is preferred. This person must have a college degree in journalism or a related field, or equivalent experience.
